What is an Akabeko?
The Akabeko (赤べこ) is one of Japan's most beloved traditional folk toys – a red papier-mâché bobblehead cow originating from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture. Dating back over 800 years, the Akabeko is considered a lucky charm, believed to ward off illness and evil spirits. Its name literally means "red cow" in the local dialect, and it remains a cherished symbol of Japanese folk craftsmanship.
