Make your own Japanese folding fan (扇子, sensu) — a satisfying craft that results in something genuinely beautiful.
The sensu is one of Japan's most elegant everyday objects — carried for centuries by everyone from samurai to tea ceremony practitioners. This kit lets you make one yourself, following the same traditional folding method, using materials sourced in Japan.
The red colourway features a classic Japanese pattern (赤紋,akamon) — bold, warm, and striking when finished. The completed fan measures H21 × W35.5 cm — a full, usable size.
Kit contents:
- 1 × Fusuma paper (fan paper)
- 1 × Fan frame
- 1 × Pattern paper (template)
You will also need: scissors, a ruler, a pencil, and craft adhesive (not included).
How to make your sensu:
- Cut the pattern — cut out the template from the pattern paper
- Shape the paper — place the template on the fusuma paper and draw guide lines
- Cut — connect the lines and cut along the shape
- Fold — make alternating mountain and valley folds
- Glue — mark glue spots and apply adhesive to the frame
- Finish — leave to dry, then trim any excess paper
